7 Ways to Volunteer that Won’t Give You (Hard) Hat Hair

Updated: Apr 25, 2023

We get it - swinging a hammer outside in January (or July) isn’t for everyone. That doesn’t mean you can’t put your passion for affordable housing to good use. Here are 7 volunteer opportunities integral to our mission of improving lives and building communities in the Greater Matthews community that are (mostly) hard hat free:

ReStore Volunteers - Habitat for Humanity ReStores are Habitat’s home improvement stores and donation centers, that sell new and gently used home goods and building materials. Sales then fund the construction of Habitat homes. By volunteering at the ReStore, you help Greater Matthews Habitat build more affordable homes in our community. ReStore volunteers help customers, create displays, process donations, and more! No matter your skillset or interests, we have volunteer opportunities at the ReStore.

Hospitality - Rather lift a fork than a hammer? Hospitality might be for you! Hospitality Volunteers prepare and provide breakfast and/or lunch to our Saturday Construction volunteers. What you make is up to you! Sandwiches, soups, pasta, bbq the only limit is your culinary imagination! This is a great way for younger volunteers to get involved with GMHFH too - we just ask for one adult (18+) to serve as the point person.

Admin - Help support affordable housing with the flip of a page! Admin volunteers fold, stuff, stamp, seal, and sort all types of documents. They also assist with data entry and other office projects as needed - all in our climate-controlled office.

Serve on a Committee - GMHFH is led by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors who are responsible for the governance and long-term strategic planning of our organization. Our Homeowner Selection Committee is responsible for selecting the Partner Families for our Homeownership Program and helping them be successful during the sweat equity and education components of our programs. Both committees require at least a full-year commitment and open applications yearly as existing committee members cycle out.

Decon - We can’t promise you won’t have to wear a hard hat for this one - but if you like construction and don’t want to be outside, you can help out as a Deconstruction Volunteer. This team goes into homes and businesses that will be remodeled or torn down and salvages items that will be sold at the ReStore or recycled. Volunteers must be 18+, be willing to have/pass a background check, and can safely and regularly lift over 50 lbs. Opportunities are on as needed basis. Another perk? Our Decons are typically on Mondays, so if you aren’t free for Saturday construction, this might be a great alternative!

Fundraise - Fundraising for GMHFH is a unique opportunity to take a proactive step in serving our community. By sharing your passion and goal with your friends and family or coworkers you can double your impact to increase donations and awareness. Hosting your own fundraiser can be done on your own schedule, and is great for groups of all sizes and ages.

Special Skills - Do you have a special set of skills to offer that isn’t listed here? Can you provide legal advice, fix a dryer, upcycle a dresser, snap great photos, or have mad IT skills? Let us know what talents you want to offer, and we’ll let you know if we ever have a need!
