Myth #1: Greater Matthews Habitat Gives Away Homes
Truth: Habitat homes are not free. Every Habitat homeowner purchases their home at 2% interest with an affordable mortgage. They also contribute 150 volunteer hours, complete financial education, and save for closing costs—just like any traditional homebuyer, but with support tailored to their income.
Myth #2: Habitat Homes are Low Quality
Truth: Our homes are built to last. We use quality materials, licensed contractors, and volunteer labor to keep costs down—not corners. Habitat homes are energy-efficient, inspected, and designed to be safe, stable, and permanent.
Myth #3: My donations aren’t important because Greater Matthews Habitat is funded through Habitat International
Truth: Each Habitat affiliate is independently operated and is entirely responsible for managing their own operations, building, ReStore, programming, and fundraising. Dollars given to Greater Matthews Habitat directly impact families in our local community.
Myth #4: Habitat homes lower property values
Truth: Studies have shown that Habitat homes have no negative impact on surrounding property values—and may even improve them by revitalizing vacant lots, replacing deteriorating structures, and bringing committed homeowners into the neighborhood. Our homes are well-built, well-maintained, and a positive investment in the community.
